Noel Whelan is backing Liverpool to make one “big name” signing this summer after securing Champions League football.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds have to match the spending of the Manchester clubs.
The Liverpool Echo claim the club are set for a £58million boost after securing a place in next season’s Champions League.
Liverpool secured a top four finish with a final day win over Crystal Palace.
At points last season, it looked as if the Reds wouldn’t be playing any European football at all next year.
This cash injection will come as a boost to Liverpool after many clubs were hit hard by the pandemic.
When asked if Liverpool can now make one big name signing this summer, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Yeah, of course.
“They are losing Wijnaldum. They need to replace him but that will be difficult because he’s been brilliant for them.
“If they want to compete with the Manchester clubs, who will strengthen this summer, they will have to match them.
“Man City and Man United will spend big money on big players and Liverpool have to match that.
“They have a good squad but you always need better players coming in to challenge. Look at Man City’s squad, that’s frightening.
“If they want to contend with that, they need better players and a bigger squad. Man City’s second team could qualify for the Champions League.
“If you have any aspirations of beating them next season, Liverpool need to show that they mean business.”
Liverpool eventually secured a third place finish in the Premier League.
The club were rocked by injuries as last season’s title defence crumbled early on in the campaign.
