New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was mobbed by Liverpool fans as he headed to Kiev for the Champions League final on Saturday night.

Liverpool face Real Madrid in a mouth-watering clash, and Gerrard’s prior commitments have meant that he’s not officially taking over at Ibrox until June 1.

And Liverpool fans are showing no signs of bitterness after their former midfielder made the switch to Rangers.

In fact, there’s evidence that the normal bond between Liverpool and Celtic could be under fire after Gerrard’s move north of the border.

Gerrard was hugged by jubilant Liverpool fans at the airport, en route to Kiev on Friday, and one fans was heard shouting ‘Smash Celtic Stevie!’

Gerrard won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 and was also in the 2007 final.

He’ll be desperate for Liverpool to overcome the odds and beat Real Madrid on Saturday night, before he focuses his attention on getting one over former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard has turned the media spotlight on Rangers since he was announced as manager and the attention he got today shows why.
