By Emma Sanders

Liverpool fans have reacted with excitement on Twitter after it was revealed Philippe Coutinho could return to the squad to face Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday evening.

The 24-year-old could line-up alongside Joel Matip who, according to Jurgen Klopp, has made his “first steps” in team training on Monday.

Reliable journalist Kristian Walsh revealed the news on Twitter and fans were sent into a frenzy of excitement at the possibility of seeing their star player back in action.

Coutinho has been absent for a over a month after he picked up an ankle injury in the 2-0 victory against Sunderland in November but he could be handed some vital minutes ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United.

The Reds take on their rivals in the Premier League at the weekend so fans will be eager to see how well Coutinho has recovered, though it is likely he will remain on the bench against the Saints.

He was in excellent form prior to picking up the injury, scoring five and assisting five in his first 13 Premier League fixtures of the 2016-17 campaign.

In his absence, Liverpool have suffered a slight dip in form after they dropped points against West Ham and Bournemouth in the league but they are still in second place in the table and recorded impressive victories against Manchester City and Everton.
