Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker said now is “the perfect chance” for youngsters at Anfield with Divock Origi and others set to leave.

This site revealed (5 April) that the club have agreements in principle for Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho, 19, Celtic’s Ben Doak, 16, and Derry City’s Trent Kone-Doherty, 15.

A Reds source has since told Football Insider (10 April) that Carvalho will join on a five-year deal upon the expiration of his contract on 30 June, with Doak’s paperwork also set to be completed soon.

The trio of teenagers are expected to join Liverpool’s set up at different levels, with Carvalho potentially set for a role in Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad.

“It is massively important that there is a recruitment drive in the younger age groups. You need to keep things ticking over. You need talented youngsters at the club. Liverpool have done this very well in recent times.

“There is going to be players like Origi leaving at the end of the season so now is the perfect chance for youngsters to come through into the first team.

“You want players who you can mould. The thing is, if they are not quite there once Liverpool have developed them they are sold for a profit. It is great business all round.”
