Liverpool player ratings v Southampton: Attacker goes missing in action
By Alex Stevens
Football Insider rates the Liverpool players after their 1-0 loss (2-0 loss on aggregate) against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Loris Karius 8 – Awesome save from Dusan Tadic in the 36th minute of the first half as he came out quickly and spread himself at the attacker’s feet to stop what looked like a certain goal, which would have changed the cup tie completely.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 7 – Full of running on the right, and made some clever runs. Looks a great talent already at the tender age of 18, but his end product was just lacking and he put his side in danger by leaving Redmond free
Dejan Lovren 6 – Fairly solid at the back but it wasn’t Southampton that was doing the attacking in the second half.
Joel Matip 6 – Liverpool are a much better side with Matip back in it, and although he didn’t have a lot to do today, he looks like the complete centre back.

James Milner 6 – Solid in defence, Didn’t really show anything in the attacking sense until the second half.
Emre Can 5 – It might not be the Germany international’s fault, but Can and Henderson do not work alongside each other. Stifling the midfield and lacking in creativity, the pair had a miserable evening. Why Klopp decided to play both and leave Georgino Wijnaldum on the bench is anyone’s guess. Unlucky not to score in the second half with a stinging effort though.
Jordan Henderson 6 – Doesn’t combine well with Emre Can and was crying out for help in midfield.
Adam Lallana 7 – Tried hard but couldn’t get anything going and was far from his normal effectual self in the first half. Better in the second half, but still no end product.
Daniel Sturridge 5 – Looked like he wanted to be out there, which is good, but also looked like he was never going to pass it to his team-mates if there was even a sniff that he could get a shot off. Missed an absolute sitter in the second half.
Philippe Coutinho 5 – Has taken time to get back to his best after injury, and although he’s not quite there yet, he showed signs of getting there, with some trademark passes to team-mates in very dangerous positions.
Roberto Firmino 4 – After a brace against Swansea he was back to his anonymous alter-ego tonight, it’s hard to give a rating to someone who didn’t seem to touch the ball. Talk about Can and Henderson, Firmino and Sturridge can’t play together either.
Divock Origi (on for Can, 78mins) – 5
Georgino Wijnaldum (on for Coutinho, 87mins) – 5
