Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray is expecting Nottingham Forest to sign wide forward Connor Mahoney and hopes that he can help take them to the Premier League.

The Nottingham Post reported earlier this week that the 20-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Reds and is ready to undergo a medical as his contract at Ewood Park is set to expire.

As Mahoney is under the age of 24, it is understood that Forest will have to pay a compensation fee to Blackburn, who were relegated due to Mark Warburton’s side winning 3-0 against Ipswich on the final day of the Championship season.

Mowbray, 53, is resigned to losing the attacking winger and hopes that he has a great future with Forest.

“Let’s hope he plays a lot of football and becomes a star and helps Forest get to the Premier League,” he said to BBC Radio Lancashire, as quoted on BBC Sport’s website.

“That’s where I hear the rumours might be, but let’s wait and see.”

The Nottingham Post reported that Mahoney had been offered a new deal with former Premier League champions Blackburn, but he wishes to carry on playing in the Championship.

Mahoney made his first senior appearance for Rovers against Nottingham Forest towards the end of last season.

He played 21 times across all competitions for the Blackburn first-team following his move from Accrington Stanley in 2013, supplying three assists but failing to score.

It looks as though Mahoney should be on his way to the City Ground after it almost being confirmed by Mowbray. The attack-minded winger will be an excellent addition to the squad and would really fit in with some of the up and coming youngsters currently playing in Warburton’s side. He is the best manager for these inexperienced stars as he has history of nurturing younger players into first-team roles. Ben Brereton is another player who can expected to excel under Warburton in the East Midlands. Forest could be on for a very solid showing next season and a mid-table finish could be within their grasp.
