Manchester City are considering a move for Middlesborough defender Ben Gibson this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that City boss Pep Guardiola has kept the 24-year-old on his radar for a number of months but the club have focused on bringing more experienced heads to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
The newspaper reports that fellow Premier League champions Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on the youngster alongside rivals Liverpool and Everton throughout the transfer window.
The report claims that the Championship side have already rejected a bid of up to £20m for Gibson from top-flight outfit West Bromwich Albion but they would reportedly be willing to sell if they receive an “exceptional” offer.
The Englishman impressed in his debut campaign in the Premier League, featuring in every single match last season and helping his side to achieve 11 clean sheets.
The central defender was unable to prevent his side from being relegated straight back to the Championship.
Gibson’s current contract at the Riverside Stadium runs out in 2021.
Football Insider verdict
Despite Middlesborough’s failings last season, Gibson proved that he has what it takes to deliver the goods in the Premier League and he could potentially become a better player in a top side. The decision will ultimately lie with the player himself and the upcoming World Cup finals in Russia are likely to play a massive part. Gibson might not be able to hold down a regular place in any of the regular Premier League sides mentioned above but staying in the Championship would surely guarantee him first-team football. There is every chance that Gibson could be selected for the England squad next year and he might decide to stay at Middlesborough and consider a move the following season.
