Marcus Edwards to Man United link emerges if ‘cheap’ Burnley transfer falls through

Marcus Edwards could be a potential transfer target for Man United in the summer window, Tim Sherwood has suggested.

The Sporting CP attacker is currently on loan at Burnley as he looks to help the Clarets win promotion back to the Premier League.

Edwards‘ loan deal at Turf Moor also includes on option to make that move permanent for £10million at the end of this season.

Sherwood though believes that if that option is not taken in the summer, clubs in the Premier League could swoop for the 26-year-old, naming Man United as one he could potentially suit.

Marcus Edwards to Man United transfer hint dropped

Things have of course not been going well at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils so far failing to make any progress in the Premier League table since the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

It therefore seems clear that Man United will have to oversee a significant overhaul of their first-team squad once the transfer market opens again in the summer.

However, there have been suggestions that Amorim will have to work on a budget when signing players for Man United, amid the club’s challenging financial situation.

Sherwood therefore feels that a move for Edwards, which he believes would be relatively cheap given the size of the option to buy in his deal with Burnley, may be worth considering for Man United.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Special about that £10million price tag that is currently on the attacker, the former Blackburn and Tottenham midfielder said: “He’s an excellent player, I don’t think he should be anywhere near the Championship in my opinion, I think he should be in the Premier League.

“I think he’ll find the game easier in the Premier League on the better pitches with the better players around him, little bit more time. He’s a quick decision-maker in his mind anyway, I think it’s a struggle in the Championship for him.

“In the Premier League it will be far easier. If they go up he will sign for Burnley and he will be very cheap at £10m.

“The scouts will be looking at him now and if he doesn’t sign for Burnley I’m sure he’ll end up in the Premier League anyway. He’s a lot better than some of them Man United players.”

Ruben Amorim could be tempted by Marcus Edwards deal

Football Insider Verdict

There is no doubt that there is a need to change and strengthen the Red Devils’ squad in the summer, with many players seemingly not fitting Amorim’s system.

Edwards has of course previously played under the current Man United boss at Sporting, so the fact they are familiar with each could allow him to fit in at Old Trafford.

Everton were also interested in Edwards in the January transfer window, so there is also some reason to believe that he is capable of playing at Premier League level.

It is also suggested that it will take INEOS owner Jim Ratcliffe several to rectify the financial situation at Man United, meaning they may have to buy cheap in the summer.

As a result, if Edwards is available for a fee similar to the option to buy in his Burnley deal, it could be a potential deal worth looking into for Amorim and co.
