Martin O'Neill delivers verdict on Steven Gerrard at Rangers
Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill thinks Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers manager should be “really good” for the Gers – and thinks the 37-year-old has “all the attributes” to be a success at Ibrox.
Gerrard will take the reins at Ibrox officially on June 1st but has wasted no time in getting to work by securing the signings of Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy.
O’Neill thinks the addition of Gary McAllister to Gerrard’s backroom staff will help the Liverpool icon in his first managerial role – and asks “why not?”
“Personally I think it’s a really good appointment. I do,” O’Neill said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“I know there is always a viewpoint in terms of inexperience. But he’s bringing Gary McAllister along who has loads and loads of experience, so the combination should be good. But yeah, I think (the appointment) should be really good for Rangers.
“Obviously, he was a brilliant, brilliant player but that doesn’t always materialise into being a brilliant manager. However, I think he’s got all the attributes and he wants to have a go. And why not?”

Football Insider verdict:
O’Neill is spot on with his view on Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers manager – particularly when you look at the other possible names that were mentioned as candidates. Getting Gerrard in should hopefully see a better quality of player come to Ibrox as the Gers try to end Celtic’s recent dominance of Scottish football. Gerrard’s past as a player gives him a fantastic platform to build on as he takes his first steps in management. Gerrard has been there and done it as a player and knows exactly what is needed to be a success at the very highest level. While there are no guarantees that he will be a success, he has as much of a chance of doing well and leading the Gers to trophies than any of the other names mentioned. There seems to be a bit of needle between him and Brendan Rodgers too – which only adds to the intrigue ahead of the new season.
