Alan Hutton has claimed that “outstanding” Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga has earned a bumper new deal with the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs full-back admitted that he has been massively impressed with the 20-year-old since he made his break into Jose Mourinho’s first team, and backed the decision to tie him down to a contract extension.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this week, Tottenham are closing in on an agreement with the player after he initially snubbed an offer towards the end of last year.
Any deal is likely to include a sizeable pay rise, and Hutton believes that improved terms would be money well spent.
“Everybody’s going to look at it and say it’s a massive pay rise, but I actually do think he is worth,” he told Football Insider.
“You’ve got a player who is on a grand a week giving his all for the team.
“I thought, to get thrown in against Liverpool, he was brilliant. He was outstanding. He handled it so well.
“He looks like he’s been round the first team for years. He’s so young, hungry to do well, he’s strong, he’s calm on the ball – he’s got everything that you need. He can play left side, right side, centre-back – he gives you so many options.
“I think Mourinho can mould him into the player that he wants, help him to grow as a player.
“He is worth it. He’s only going to get better. He’s a massive talent with massive potential.”
Tanganga was handed his Premier League debut by Mourinho in the 1-0 defeat to leaders Liverpool last month.
Since then he has been a virtual ever-present for Spurs, missing just one match since – the 2-1 win over Norwich City.
