Matt O’Riley told to accept ‘£40,000-a-week’ Celtic offer by club idol

Celtic star Matt O’Riley has been tipped to stay at the club beyond the summer transfer window, with a new contract mooted.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie insisted the midfielder should be offered a bumper new deal with a wage of £40,000 per week to convince him to stay.

O’Riley, 23, swept up at Celtic’s Player of the Year award as he finished the season with 19 goals and 18 assists in 49 appearances, attracting interest from across Europe.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that it would take a minimum fee of £30million to lure the Denmark international away from Parkhead.

Matt O’Riley tipped to remain at Celtic amid transfer rumours

Multiple clubs are said to have registered their interest in signing the midfielder this summer after his impressive form, with many expecting him to leave Parkhead.

However, McAvennie thinks he could stay at the club as he doesn’t expect any of the interested clubs to be at a higher level than Celtic, or to be able to give him the support he gets in Glasgow.

I think he’ll stay, where’s he going to go?” he told Football Insider.

He could go to Italy and he’d be a star in Italy, it’s his kind of pace and his kind of football, but he’ll never be loved more than when he’s at Celtic Park.

If it was up to me, I’d give him £40,000 per week to stay. Spend that money on him over the next three years.

You’d put his price up as well by giving him a contract like that.

I just think he’ll stay. Why would you want to leave? He says he loves Celtic, so if they give him the money, I don’t think he’ll leave.”
