Frank McAvennie has urged Celtic to make a big push for a new centre-back this month – and claimed top target Ben Davies would fit the bill.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker delivered his verdict on possible reinforcements after the devastating Christopher Jullien blow.
Neil Lennon revealed the giant centre-back will be sidelined for up to four months with the knee injury he sustained last week.
Davies has emerged as a key target for Celtic and they have been given a major boost in their pursuit after Football Insider revealed earlier on Friday the defender has rejected a club-record contract offer from Preston.
Along with teammates, Daniel Johnson and Ben Pearson – another Hoops target – the centre-back has knocked back an extension to his deal expiring in the summer.
Asked by Football Insider if Celtic should push the boat out to sign Davies this month, McAvennie said:
“Celtic need a centre-half more, definitely. They need to sign one or two centre-halves.
“[Shane] Duffy has not covered himself in glory since he has come. The fans are just… It has not worked. Why we brought him in is baffling.
“They play a completely different game at Brighton.
“It is not a great situation at Celtic. They also need to sign a right-back though because Elhamed looks like he’s away. He is going back home.”
Celtic have been tracking Davies since August as a potential replacement for Kristoffer Ajer, as first revealed by this site.
The 25-year-old will be sold this month if Preston’s £5million valuation is met.
