Chelsea midfielder Luke McCormick has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan after being convinced by the club’s coaching staff led by Frank Lampard, Football Insider can reveal.
Football Insider revealed this morning that the Premier League giants were in advanced talks with the midfield rising star, 20, over an extension to his deal before planning to loan him out.
It was subsequently announced by Chelsea on their official website that the deal had been signed and McCormick was headed to Shrewsbury for the season.
A Chelsea source has told Football Insider that the terms of the contract were agreed after Lampard convinced McCormick that Shrewsbury were the right club for him ahead of rival suitors.
McCormick has come through the ranks at Chelsea, but has yet to make a first-team appearances for the club.
A number of Football League clubs have made enquiries about signing McCormick on loan this summer, but Shrewsbury have trumped them all in what is regarded as a major coup.
The loan move will be McCormick’s first loan away from Chelsea and manager Lampard is convinced the youngster will benefit by going away and getting valuable first-team experience under his belt.
McCormick has impressed for Chelsea’s youth sides in recent years and he was highly enough rated to be handed his first professional contract in January 2017.
He is entering the final year of that deal, but the club have high hopes he can eventually challenge for their senior squad.
