Alex McLeish has backed Stade Brest defender Romain Perraud to be a “terrific” signing for Leeds United.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, called the 23-year-old a “left-field” transfer target.
As revealed by Football Insider, Perraud is Leeds’ top left-back target with Ezgjan Alioski set to depart at the end of his contract.
Perraud’s contract at Brest runs until 2025 after he signed a two-year contract extension back in January.
McLeish admitted Leeds’ pursuit of the former France youth international was something of a surprise.
However, he backed Perraud to flourish under Bielsa’s tutelage at Elland Road.
“That does seem left-field,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“But if Marcelo Bielsa’s after him, he must be some prospect.
“He must be terrific quality or terrific potential.
“These are the two ingredients that make you think he’s going to be a good addition.”
While Brest struggled in Ligue 1, Perraud caught the eye with his fine performances at left-back.
He scored three goals and contributed seven assists in 36 league appearances this term.
He was named in France Football’s Ligue 1 team of the year alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria.
A graduate of OGC Nice’s academy, Perraud has 57 Ligue 1 appearances under his belt to date.
Other than Alioski, Bielsa has used the versatile Stuart Dallas and 21-year-old prospect Leif Davis at left-back this season.
