McLeish issues Giovanni van Bronckhorst sack claim after Rangers source's update - 'ruthless'

Rangers should not sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst despite their poor start to the season.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Van Bronckhorst’s future.

Football Insider understands Van Bronckhorst is under growing threat of the sack after a dismal start to the campaign with Rangers chiefs believed to be increasingly concerned about how far the team has slipped behind Celtic.

Rangers have lost 4-0 to Celtic, 4-0 to Ajax and 3-0 to Napoli in the last three games and sit five points behind their city rivals in the Premiership table.

McLeish insists Van Bronckhorst should be given more time.

“I am always on the side of the manager, I always have empathy in these situations,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“We had a treble-winning season during my first year at Rangers but then we lost around 10 of those players.

“We very quickly brought in players throughout pre-season. It was mostly free transfers because the club wasn’t doing well financially.

“In their hay day, these guys were fantastic players but they didn’t have the sharpness. You need to have a squad you are happy with and one that you can say is yours.

“We had a difficult season and I thought I was in trouble, Rangers are a pressure club. The board understood that I had a poor deck of cards and told me to go again in the next season.

“We planned well for the next season and we won the title. What I have to say is we are now in a different era. I’m not saying the board will act and sack Giovanni but we are in an era where you see managers sacked after five games.

“It’s been ruthless down in England and in the rest of Europe. I would hope Rangers give Giovanni the chance to get his own team on the pitch.

“There were some promising signs with the system he used against Napoli so there are reasons to be encouraged.”
