Mills: I told Leeds 18 months ago to sign White for £17m - and now it's Arsenal getting the bargain

Danny Mills has backed Arsenal to complete a deal for Ben White as soon as possible.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender insisted the £50million price tag is a “really, really good price”.

Football Insider revealed on 17 June that White has told friends, including those at Leeds, he expects to join Arsenal this summer.

The Athletic reported on 24 June Arsenal were moving closer to reaching an agreement with Brighton over a deal that would be worth around £50million.

Aden Jay-Wood of Latest Brighton reported yesterday (12 July) the Gunners are now confident a deal can be done “imminently”.

That is after White and England’s European Championship campaign ended in heartbreak with a defeat on penalties to Italy at the weekend.

White did not feature for the Three Lions in the tournament after he was a late replacement for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Asked whether Arsenal should now try and secure the signing of White, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Definitely.

“Go back 18 months, when Ben White was playing for Leeds in the Championship, I said ‘Sign him up now. Pay Brighton the £17million, £20million whatever they wanted at the time. Get him signed up.’

“Now when you look at City spending £40million on Nathan Ake, Ben White at £50million is a really good price, a really really good price.”

White featured in 36 Premier League games for Brighton last term.

His performances earned him a first call-up to the England squad and he earned two caps in the pre-tournament friendlies.

In other news, James Ellis has agreed to join Arsenal from a Premier League rival.
