Mills slams 'foolish' Small after latest Everton reveal
Danny Mills has insisted Thierry Small has been “poorly advised” after he failed to report back to Everton pre-season training.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England defender whose son is also a member of the Everton academy admitted it has put the club in an “awkward situation”.
The Athletic reported on 13 July the 16-year-old missed the first week of pre-season training.
Football Insider broke the news the next day Aston Villa have made a move to sign the left-back.
This site then revealed yesterday (15 July) Everton have knocked back Real Madrid’s move to sign Small.
“He hasn’t gone back, that’s a fact,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think it’s foolish, if I’m honest. A young player, who;s just about to turn 17, one appearance for the first team off the bench, hasn’t turned up to training.
“It’s difficult for the club because of his age there aren’t too many sanctions they can impose. That makes it awkward for the club. Because we’re talking about an academy player we’d be talking about compensation packages and everything else.
“I think he’s been poorly advised, it’s the wrong thing to do. You’re just about to turn 17, how good do you think you are? At that age, you just have to play Under-23s football and maybe go out on loan if you’re good enough.
“To try and force through a move because what? You think you’re good enough for someone’s first team after one appearance? It’s not a wise decision.”
