Newcastle 29-year-old issues battlecry ahead of crunch game with Leeds
By Matt Bullin
Newcastle and Senegal midfielder Mo Diame has claimed the Toon’s next match against Leeds United is ‘massive’ and that his team need to stay ‘focused and confident’.
Newcastle will look to get back to winning ways this Friday against Leeds, after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Jonjo Shelvey scored a late consolation goal for the Toon but it was not enough to earn them anything from the game, after Tom Lees and Steven Fletcher had earlier netted for the Owls.
The result means Newcastle lost pace on Champioship leaders Brighton, who have now opened up a two-point gap over Rafa Benitez’ side after beating QPR 2-1.
However an automatic promotion spot looks almost certain for Newcastle, as they have a 10-point lead on Huddersfield, who currently occupy third, with just five games left.

Diame started the match against Wednesday, but was substituted after 72 minutes, to be replaced by Christian Atsu.
The Senegalese international told Chronicle Live after the match: “We had a big opportunity to get back at the top of the league, and it was a big disappointment for everyone.”
He also spoke of the upcoming Leeds clash: “We have a week to recover and think about the next game, which is a massive one at home.
“We’re still in a good situation. We have to stay focused and stay confident. We just need to give everything.”
Diame, who has been capped by Senegal 36 times, has scored six goals in his 36 league and cup games this term, as well as laying on three assists for his team mates.
