Ndombele U-turn tipped at Tottenham after 'face-to-face' Conte talks - pundit

New Tottenham manager Antonio Conte will “get the best” out of Tanguy Ndombele, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed the 24-year-old to “step up and rise to the challenge” of playing for the demanding Italian.

Ndombele came off the bench to play 18 minutes in Conte’s maiden fixture – a 3-2 Europa Conference League victory against Vitesse on Thursday.

The Frenchman worked his way back into the departed Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans after asking to leave the club during the summer.

Ndombele started five consecutive games in the Premier League before the ex-Wolves manager’s sacking – despite not featuring at all during pre-season.

Phillips insisted the Tottenham midfielder will be “excited” at the prospect of working under Conte.

“I think Conte will get the best out of Ndombele,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“The personality Conte has, the demands he places on his players, he will make it clear what he expects and demands.

“He will look Ndombele in the eyes, face-to-face, one-to-one, and ask him if he is willing to meet those demands.

“I’ve said all along that he’s a fantastic player and I personally think he will step up and rise to the challenge.

“The players will all be excited to work under Conte. Going the other way, the players didn’t seem overly keen when Nuno was appointed in the summer.

“Now that Conte has come through the door, they will be buzzing. From what I hear, they were really happy with the first session he put on.

“He’ll get the best out of those players who haven’t quite performed to their maximum. He’s a winner, he’s experienced.”
