New Rangers signing Nikola Katic has revealed why he chose a move to Ibrox over Spartak Moscow – and admitted Steven Gerrard was a big factor in his decision to join the Light Blues.
The Croatian also admitted that he thinks the standard of football in Scotland is better than in Russia – and insisted money “wasn’t important” in his decision.
The 21-year-old revealed he was blown away when Gerrard first contacted him – and admitted he sent all his friends a message telling them the Liverpool icon had contacted him.
“Rangers are bigger than Spartak because of all the history and in my opinion Scottish football is better than in Russia and money wasn’t important – I just want to play,” Katic said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“The size of the club and Gerrard as a coach were the main factors.
“The Gerrard factor was very important because he was a really great player and knows everything about football.
“Everyone said to me ‘It’s Gerrard, you need to go because you will learn and make good steps’. When I saw Gerrard was calling me I thought ‘wow’.
“I sent all my friends a message saying, ‘Steven Gerrard called me’.”
Football Insider verdict:
Gerrard’s arrival has had a profound impact on the quality of players heading to Ibrox and Katic is the latest to admit the Gers boss was a big influence in his decision. Hopefully, the Gers boss can have as big an impact on his side’s performances and get them in a position to challenge bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the table. With plenty of time remaining in the transfer window, Gerrard will likely have more signings arrive and if the first batch of signings is anything to go by then the Gers boss’ reputation will have a big hand in convincing them to come to Ibrox. Hiring the Liverpool legend was always going to have an influence on players coming to the club and it will surely have been something that the Gers considered when they were mulling over the move to appoint Gerrard as manager earlier in the summer.
