Newcastle have been told by Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon that it will take a £12million offer, with a 20% sell-on clause, to prise centre-back Ruben Semedo away from the club, according to a report.
Portuguese news outlet O’Jogo claimed on their website on Thursday that Sporting Lisbon have presented their conditions to Newcastle for their defensive star, which includes the eight-figure valuation.
The young defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks and it has now been set out how much it would take for the Magpies to secure the player they are interested in.
Manager Rafa Benitez will be scouring the summer market for players who he feels can help them remain in the English top-flight after winning promotion with a first place finish in the Championship in the last campaign.
Youngster Semedo would certainly add some steel to the Newcastle back line after he played in 31 matches in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon in the last campaign, including six outings in the Champions League.
The former Portugal Under-21 international made his debut for the club back in August 2015 and he has since gone on to feature 48 times in total for the club that finished in third place in the Portuguese top-flight last season.
Football Insider verdict:
Given that one of Newcastle’s main frailties last time they were in the Premier League was their defence it would only make sense that they are now looking to add to it. The Magpies won the Championship with an impressive defence last season, boasting the joint best defensive record with second placed Brighton after just 40 goals conceded from 46 matches. However, as Newcastle fans and Rafa Benitez will know, the Premier League is an entirely different kettle of fish and for £12million Semedo should be an essential signing.
