Newcastle close in on Johannes Spors after dramatic twist – sources

Johannes Spors has emerged as the top target to replace Dan Ashworth as the sporting director at Newcastle United.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that it had been a two-horse race between Spors, 41, and Dougie Freedman, and with Freedman turning down the move, the path has cleared for the German.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed that Crytal Palace sporting director Freedman turned down the offer from Newcastle in favour of remaining at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle are now keen to finalise the appointment as soon as possible, with the transfer window set to open soon ahead of a busy summer at St James’ Park.

Johammes Spors emerges as top Newcastle director target

Spors is currently the sporting director of 777 Group, a multi-club ownership group with investments in Belgium, France, Italy, Brazil and Germany, which is currently attempting to purchase Everton.

He has overseen an overhaul in the sporting operations at 777 and is said to be in favour of a combination of in-stadium scouting and video and data analysis when it comes to identifying and signing players.

While Freedman had emerged as the first choice for the role before a late change of heart, Spors remains highly rated by decision-makers at Newcastle.

The Magpies will face a busy summer window with several players rumoured to be leaving, with interest in the likes of Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, and incomings needed to strengthen the squad.

While business has already started, as Football Insider revealed negotiations are underway to sign Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo, the appointment of Spors as sporting director will provide them with structure and direction.

In other news, Arsenal have shortlisted Alexander Isak as a striker option.
