Newcastle are eyeing a loan-to-buy deal for Crystal Palace wideman Andros Townsend, according to a report.
North east publication the Chronicle has claimed on Thursday morning that the Magpies are open to thrashing out a loan move for the 25-year-old with the hopes of making it a permanent one in the summer.
The Daily Mail broke on Saturday that the north east giants were plotting a shock move for their former winger.
However, Ed Aarons, deputy sports news chief for the Guardian followed up the story on his personal Twitter account, claiming the player is unlikely to leave south London.
But, the latest Chronicle article suggests that a January deal is still on for the player who only left in the summer.
In fact Newcastle signed Townsend from Premier League side Tottenham 12 months a go in a £12million switch.
He played in 13 encounters for the club, bringing a return of four goals and two assists, but he was unable to keep the Toon in the English top flight.
This led to the player having to make a decision best for his career and it is believed that he left for Palace in a £13million deal with the hope of staying in the England set-up.
However, with just two assists and one goal coming for Sam Allardyce’s team in 22 appearances he could be set for a swift return to the north east.
Football Insider verdict:
Rafa Benitez has made it clear this month that he is looking to sign players who could all make the step up to the top flight and there is no doubts that Townsend would be able to do so. The player has arguably had the best moments of his career with the England national team, but he has still showed some quality in flashes at club level. The loan-to-buy deal would also be a safe move for both parties. Newcastle are highly expected to win promotion, but in the shock scenario that they don’t, Townsend would look for a move again. However, his addition will play a part in seeing them return to the top flight and the club should secure his signature once again this January.
In other Newcastle transfer news, an emphatic decision has been made on this player tipped to join the Magpies.
