From Spain: Newcastle eye swoop for 23-year-old La Liga attacker

By Russell Edge

Newcastle are interested in bringing Leganes forward Gabriel Pires to St James’ Park, according to a report.

Thursday’s issue of Spanish football magazine Marca claims that the Magpies are looking to make a move for the 23-year-old ahead of next season’s Premier League campaign.

Known as Gabriel, the Leganes man is able to play as a second striker or drop further back into midfield.

In 32 league appearances the Brazilian has scored five goals for Leganes, who sit 16th in La Liga.

A product of the Juventus youth system, he left the Italian giants to move to Spain in the summer of 2016, signing a contract until the 2019.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle have had mixed success when recruiting from Spain. For every diamond in the rough they sign, such as Ayoze Perez and Jose Enrique, they have managed to pick up flops like Albert Luque and Xisco. There is no doubt Rafa Benitez will be using his Spanish contacts to source the best talent from the country as he plans to overhaul his squad ahead of their return to the top flight. However, Gabriel’s record does not exactly scream quality, playing for a side near the bottom of La Liga. Whether he is an improvement on Newcastle’s current attacking midfielders, such as Perez or Mo Diame, must wait to be seen.
