Newcastle fans ‘devastated’ by ‘heartbreaking’ Joe Willock blow

Newcastle United fans have been left “devastated” after Joe Willock was forced off with an injury during the Carabao Cup clash v Nottingham Forest.

Willock scored the opener after just 18 seconds as Eddie Howe’s side drew 1-1 before winning the tie on penalties to progress to the next round.

However, the joy in their ultimate progression in the cup was clouded by Willock’s injury blow.

The midfielder suffered a blow to his leg during the game which saw him taken off just 15 minutes into his first start of the season.

This comes after he missed a substantial period of pre-season while recovering from a previous injury – an ankle issue which had kept him out since April.

Willock has been struggling with Achilles tendon problems since November 2023, initially returning in February before he was ruled out again just over a month later.

Now, upon his return to Howe’s starting lineup, he looks set for another spell on the sidelines in what has been described as a “heartbreaking” twist.

The 25-year-old has suffered a patchy injury record since moving to St James’ Park, missing a total of 47 games since the 2021-22 season.

However, he has established himself as a key part of the squad when available and brings something different to Howe’s system.

After the latest blow, supporters have flocked to social media to wish the midfielder well and extend their well-wishes and hopes for his swift return.
