Newcastle were quick to poke fun at Middlesbrough when they sacked Aitor Karanka on Thursday.

Suggestions that Steve McClaren should replace the former Real Madrid assistant boss in charge at the Riverside sparked a series of jokes from the Toon Army aimed at their north-east rivals.

The 55-year-old managed Middlesbrough for five years before leaving in 2006 and has since had a terrible time in charge at Newcastle between 2015 and 2016.

After being sacked by the Magpies, he found himself at Derby where he lasted just five months until he was sacked on Sunday.

McLaren has also had failed spells as the manager of England, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest.

Boro are currently 19th in the Premier League this season and have failed to win in nine league games dating back to mid-December.

Newcastle fans have now suggested that it would be hilarious if their rivals replaced Karanka with the ex-England boss and have even suggested that they go as far as bringing in other failed staff members of the club including Alan Pardew and Joe Kinnear.

If things were to finish as they stand, Newcastle would replace Boro and fierce rivals Sunderland in England’s top flight.

Here is a selection of tweets from the Toon Army suggesting that McClaren should take the Riverside vacancy:

In other Newcastle news, this senior play is reportedly set for six games on the sidelines.
