Newcastle fans rage as ‘horrific’ Ryan Yates footage emerges v Nottingham Forest
Newcastle United fans have been left raging after Ryan Yates avoided a red card during the Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest.
Eddie Howe’s side mounted an impressive comeback to win 3-1, having been 1-0 down at half-time, thanks to goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes.
However, it was the Forest midfielder who grabbed the attention of the away supporters as he appeared to elbow Tino Livramento without punishment – before later escaping any reprimand for a knee-high challenge on Sean Longstaff.
Replays showed that he had looked at the right-back before leading with his elbow to challenge for a header, leaving him bleeding from the mouth.
Later in the first half, he went into a challenge and planted his studs into the thigh of Longstaff after missing the ball, but again was not shown a card.
Yates, 26, has picked up a reputation for his tough tackling and no-nonsense style in the midfield, but has been branded a “thug” by Newcastle fans after his display.
However, referee Anthony Taylor and VAR official Tim Robinson seemingly turned a blind eye to both incidents as he went unpunished, before later picking up a card in the second half.
Newcastle United fans explode at Ryan Yates v Nottingham Forest
It was an impressive win for the Magpies despite the cloud of some questionable refereeing decisions, as they took all three points from a high-flying Forest.
The officials have come under intense scrutiny by the fans at St James’ Park already this season, and more controversial calls are unlikely to ease their frustrations.
Many took to social media in response to the challenges, with footage shared amongst supporters, as they labelled the officials “horrific” and the tackles “disgusting”.
