Newcastle fans react on Twitter to reported Jermain Defoe bombshell

By Amir Mir

Jermain Defoe could leave Sunderland on a free transfer in the summer if they are relegated, according to a report, and Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter with humour and hope that they could nab him from their bitter rivals.

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope broke the news on his personal Twitter account regarding the 34-year-old striker on Wednesday evening.

England international Defoe has been a key figure for the Black Cats, helping them survive relegation last term and scoring 14 goals during this campaign as they sit rock-bottom this season.

One Magpie supporter saw the funny side to the Defoe bombshell stating it would be hilarious if he moved to Newcastle in the summer.

Rafa Benitez’ side currently sit top of the table in the Championship  as they are looking likely to make an instant return to the top flight.

Furthermore, there were a number of fans who stated that they would happily see Defoe swap the Stadium of Light for St James’ Park.

However, another Newcastle supporter was against the idea of signing Defoe because at 34 he’s too old.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Former Tottenham man Defoe recently earned a recall to the England squad, making his return during a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania last Sunday.

Gareth Southgate opted to start the experienced player during the 2-0 win at Wembley, with his opening goal setting the scene for the home side.

Defoe has found the back of the net on 14 occasions this term and he has the chance of scoring 20 goals during this campaign with eight matches of the season remaining.

The Black Cats take on fellow strugglers Watford on Saturday afternoon, with David Moyes’ side needing three points.

In other Newcastle news, the club have held talks in China over a possible mega-money deal.
