Newcastle fans react on Twitter to reported interest in PL assist king

By Matt Farr

Newcastle are considering a move for Gylfi Sigurdsson if they seal a return to the Premier League this summer – and fans on Twitter are excited.

The Sun claimed on Monday morning that Rafa Benitez was weighing up a £15million move for the Swansea star, who is one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old assist king has contributed nine goals and 11 assists for the struggling Premier League club, despite their ongoing flirtations with the relegation zone.

Benitez wants Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to stump up the cash to land Sigurdsson this summer, and fans on Twitter are already excited at the prospect.

A sticking point in a potential deal, however, could be the transfer fee, with Swansea likely to want much more than the £15million that Benitez is reportedly prepared to offer.

The Iceland international is the club’s most prized asset, and the club are extremely reluctant to sell.

Swansea made their stance clear in February when it was reported they had knocked back a £30million offer for his services from the Chinese Super League.

But if Paul Clement’s side were to be relegated from the Premier League this season, Sigurdsson may prefer to remain in the top tier.

Even in such circumstances, however, Newcastle would face heavy competition for his signature.
