Newcastle maintain interest in 25-year-old Championship star after initial enquiry - report
By Harvey Byrne
Newcastle have not given up on the signing of Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney, according to a report.
The Chronicle are reporting that the north east giants are set to go in for the 25-year-old once more after an initial enquiry.
The report states that Rafa Benitez’ side enquired about the Championship star earlier in the window, but that they were quoted a huge fee for his services.
However, it is believed that Newcastle have not given up on the hopes of signing the playmaker and Cairney is believed to be well aware of the Toons’ interest.
The midfielder only joined Fulham in the summer of 2015 from Championship rivals Blackburn.
He boasts plenty of second tier experience having played for each of Hull, Blackburn and the Cottagers.
The player has played 198 times in total in the Championship with a return of 22 goals and 32 assists.
This season Cairney has covered the attacking midfield and central midfield areas, while mainly playing on the right.
He has returned with five goals and four assists in 26 encounters for Fulham this season and has been a key reason why they are sat in eighth place.
But, with two years left on his contract, Fulham are not under any pressure to sell their star man.
Football Insider verdict:
If Newcastle can negotiate a fee of lower than £10million then they should definitely go out and sign Cairney. However, anything more and he would be a bad signing. At 25, the player has already met his potential and he has just one season of playing in the Premier League. Newcastle are on course to make the English top flight at the first time of asking this campaign and they should now be scouring for players that can at least maintain their position in the side in the Premier League. Cairney would be very much a short-term signing to boost the squad and therefore Newcastle should avoid being held to ransom by Fulham for the player.
