Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle’s squad looks strong enough without any extra additions in January, in particular in the attacking department. Rafael Benitez’s side are the highest goalscorers in the Championship and currently have Ayoze Perez as their number 10 playmaker in the team. They are also chasing moves for Andros Townsend and Modou Barrow from the Premier League, which would be much better options that Gabriel. Newcastle’s best bet would be signing players that have experienced English football before, while Gabriel remains an untested quality. The 23-year-old has been unable to recapture his best form this season and there is no guarantee he would get into the starting XI.
