Newcastle fringe player relishing opportunity of FA Cup replay against Birmingham

By Emma Sanders

Daryl Murphy claims Newcastle’s FA Cup replay against Birmingham is another opportunity for fringe players like himself to impress Rafa Benitez.

Murphy is pleased he will have another chance to shine after he produced an encouraging performance during the 1-1 draw against Birmingham.

The fringe player scored his first goal of the season in Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie and is looking forward to the possibility of more matches.

Murphy also stated he has had to wait for his chance given the impressive form of Newcastle’s first team at the start of the season but a dip in results could help him fight his way back into contention.

“It’s another game for us players who haven’t really been playing to get up to speed. It’s a good chance for us to show what we can do and help out the team,” said Murphy in the Chronicle.

“I felt good out there but I am just lacking a bit of sharpness and that will only come with games. I hope I can make an impact. I have waited a while for the chance because the lads were doing so well.”

The 33-year-old has featured on just five occasions for Newcastle in the Championship this season, with four of those matches coming in August.

He joined for £3million from Ipswich in the summer but the striker has largely been overlooked in favour of Dwight Gayle who is the club’s current top goalscorer with 19 league goals in 21 appearances.

Murphy could be handed another start when the Magpies host Birmingham in the FA Cup replay on 17th January and he will be hoping to add to his goal tally.
