Newcastle have been handed the opportunity to sign Daniel Sturridge from Liverpool for £15million this summer, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that Newcastle tried to bag him on loan in January but now have the option to sign him on a permanent deal.
However, it is said that he isn’t one of Benitez’s top targets and the club isn’t happy at the way he pulled out of the January deal.
A deal in principle had been agreed between Jurgen Klopp and Benitez in January but the striker decided to join West Brom instead.
Football Insider verdict:
The choices you make in life can come back to haunt you and Sturridge must be praying that his decision to snub Newcastle and join West Brom won’t get in the way of what could be a brilliant career move. There’s no doubt that Sturridge, fit and on form, is one of the best strikers in the country. The trouble is, he’s hardly ever fit. His move to West Brom descended into farce after he was injured almost immediately after making his debut for the midlands side, and in total they reportedly paid a £3.8million loan fee for him to make six appearances and not score. However, there’s a reality here. Newcastle desperately need a new striker and if Benitez can keep him fit, they’d have a real bargain, and a player who could easily bag 20+ goals next season. Given his budget, Benitez won’t be able to get anyone better and he’s already taken gambles on cut-price players who aren’t good enough, like Joselu. Now it could be time to eat some humble pie and take a massive gamble on Sturridge. What have they got to lose?
