Newcastle are plotting a move for Hull midfielder Robert Snodgrass in the January transfer window, according to a report.

The Sun claim that the Magpies want to sign the 29-year-old at a cut-price £5million as he has told Hull that he wants to leave them.

The report details that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is looking to exploit the situation of Snodgrass, who’s current deal expires in the summer and Hull are struggling to meet his wage demands.

Hull are currently bottom of the Premier League table with 12 points from 17 games and are three points from safety.

Mike Phelan’s side are without a win in the league since 6 November against Southampton, but Snodgrass has certainly been one of the club’s star player this season.

The winger has made 18 appearances across all competitions this campaign, scoring seven goals and supplying two assists.

He was also a goal machine during his spell at Elland Road with Leeds, scoring 41 goals in 187 appearances.

The Scotland international has shown his qualities in the top flight and also helped Hull achieve promotion via the play-offs from the Championship last season.

Newcastle are currently at the summit of the Championship table and have a nine-point gap ahead of the play-off positions.

Benitez’ side are in a great position to return to the Premier League at the first attempt and Snodgrass could add even more quality to their impressive squad.

Snodgrass would be fighting for a starting place alongside the likes of Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu, Yoan Gouffran and Rolando Aarons.

Football Insider verdict:

Robert Snodgrass could certainly be the player to ensure Newcastle’s promotion this season. The winger would be an exceptional signing and has proven this campaign that he is good enough for the Premier League. The tricky winger would give the Magpies an extra goal threat from midfield and has experience of being promoted from the Championship. Newcastle should try and persuade Snodgrass to drop down a division in January and they could help him achieve greater success in the future than Hull. He is one of Scotland’s greatest threats in the national team and would definitely improve the Newcastle team.
