Newcastle player ratings v Ipswich: Defensive duo are 4/10
By Matt Farr
Football Insider rates the Newcastle players during their 3-1 defeat to Ipswich in the Championship on Monday afternoon.
Karl Darlow 6 – Assertive in the box in handling aerial dangers. But it was his poor clearance that allowed Ipswich to lurch forward and bag a second goal.
DeAndre Yedlin 4 – Sloppy defensively and in his positioning. The defender was second best to Tom Lawrence throughout.
Paul Dummett 6 – Burst forward well on the overlap and offered decent delivery. But left David McGoldrick unmarked at the far post to tap in Ipswich second.
Jamaal Lascelles 5 – No longer looks an authorative presence in the defence. Guilty of backing off for Ipswich opener.
Grant Hanley 4 – Looked tentative and nervous. Another defender found guilty of backing off. Hardly justified Benitez decision to axe Chancel Mbemba.
Jonjo Shelvey 5 – Always involved in the transition between defence and attack, but not with his usual precision. Wasted countless opportunities.
Isaac Hayden 6 – Showed desire to win the ball back for Newcastle, but it was a desire not widely shared by his team-mates.
Christian Atsu 7 – Linked up well with Dummett on the left. Fantastic cross for Murphy equaliser. Offered rare moments of class for Newcastle.
Mo Diame 6 – Struggled to enforce any real rhythm to Newcastle’s game. Showed improvement in the second half, but to no avail.
Matt Ritchie 6 – Caught in possession for Ipswich opener, having just missed a golden opportunity to put Newcastle ahead. Looked determined to make amends as game progressed.
Daryl Murphy 6 – Largely isolated, and chasing misdirected long balls. Looked a disappointing return to Portman Road until his equaliser.
Subs:
Yoan Gouffran 6 (for Hayden 61)
Jesus Gamez 6 (for Yedlin 78)
Aleksandar Mitrovic 6 (for Ritchie 82)
