Newcastle boost as senior man delivers injury update following FA Cup clash

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles believes crocked star Aleksandar Mitrovic will be back in action in no time at all.
The Serbia international was stretchered off just 10 minutes into Newcastle’s FA Cup third round clash with Birmingham on Saturday, and fans feared the worst.
The striker also required a supply of oxygen, raising further concerns that Mitrovic had suffered a major injury.
However, talking in the Chronicle, Newcastle team-mate Lascelles has revealed that Mitrovic did not suffer a break, or any damaged ligaments, but a very deep cut to his leg.
He admitted he did not see the cause of the injury, but it is believed to have occurred in a collision with Birmingham goalkeeper Adam Legzdins..

The 22-year-old is now likely to be out for a few weeks, as opposed to months or a season-ending setback – news which will delight Magpies fans.
Lascelles also backed the ‘tough’ striker to make a swift return and come back strong from his setback.
“Mitro’s a tough guy and he’ll recover from it,” he said. “There are no bones broken. It’s just a cut on the knee.
“I didn’t see it. I just saw the cut on his leg which was quite deep.
“Because he was throwing his body around in there, he got us a goal. Fair play to him, he’ll be back sooner than we think.”
Just as Mitrovic went down, fellow striker Daryl Murphy put Newcastle ahead with his very first goal for the club since arriving from Ipswich in the summer.
However, the Magpies could not maintain their advantage, allowing Lukas Jutkiewicz to level the scoreline before the break.
Neither side could find the all-important breakthrough in the second period, and are set for a replay at St. James’ Park on January 18.
