Newcastle tipped to sign 'absolute quality' duo as source reveals Howe's January plan

Newcastle only need to sign “one or two” quality players in January to avoid being relegated from the Premier League.

That’s according to former Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toon’s January plans.

On 11 November, Football Insider revealed Newcastle are already making plans to bring three new players to the club in January.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Howe’s priority is to recruit two centre-backs and a central midfielder proven at the highest level.

The Magpies are five points from safety and lie 19th in the Premier League with nine games still to play until the window opens.

Their defensive record proves Newcastle have problems at the back with only Norwich conceding more goals this season.

However, McLeish claims Newcastle only need a couple of new players in January to avoid the drop.

“Newcastle only need one or two,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“In my opinion, I think one or two players who have that absolute quality will transform that side.

“This season is just about staying up so I’m not sure how much long-term signing there will be going on in January.

“Newcastle need a quick fix. One or two players will inspire the rest of the players and that can make all the difference in a relegation battle.

“The money is there to do that, we all know that. So it will be a big month for Newcastle.”

The Magpies face clashes against both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Leicester before the window opens.

Eddie Howe faces his first game as Toon boss against Brentford on 20 November.

In other news, United have agreed terms with proven Premier League operator ahead of January.
