Newcastle tipped to spend ‘£50m’ on ‘next Shearer’ after Hope reveal – pundit

Newcastle United could spend £50million on the next Alan Shearer in January.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after an update on Callum Wilson’s fitness.

Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday (29 December) Wilson, 29, could miss six weeks of action after picking up an injury against Man United on Monday (27 December).

The Telegraph also reported on Wednesday that Newcastle have stepped up their attempts to sign a new striker in the January window.

Wilson has scored 6 goals in 15 outings this season and McAvennie claims Newcastle will have to spend if they are to replace his attacking threat.

“Newcastle have had some great centre-forwards through the years,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You look at Malcolm Macdonald, Alan Shearer. That’s what they need now, the next Shearer.

“Wilson is such a big player in that team and I am such a big fan of him.

“If he’s going to be out for a while then Newcastle may as well go out and spend big on a new striker.

“Get a new main man in because Wilson does have his injury issues.

“Newcastle need to spend £40million, maybe more like £50million on a guy who will guarantee you goals.

“They have the money to do that so why not? Goals will keep them up, it will be worth it.”
