Newcastle to sign Callum Wilson replacement before sale agreed – O’Rourke
Newcastle United will look to sign a replacement for Callum Wilson before letting him leave in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Magpies are unlikely to let the striker leave despite having just six months remaining on his contract.
Alexander Isak’s recent injury issues coming on top of Wilson’s own problems have lent an insight into what life would be like without a natural backup for their main number nine.
Anthony Gordon was chosen to start up top on the 1-1 draw against Manchester City, but there is an acceptance that he cannot be the long-term backup.
As a result, the club are keen on keeping Wilson at St James’ Park for the rest of the season, but will move to land a new striker before letting him leave if a bid arrives in January.
This comes after Football Insider reported that there is no shortage of interest in the 32-year-old, with both Fulham and Brentford keen on landing a deal.
Newcastle United to sign new striker after Callum Wilson twist
Wilson is out of contract at St James’ Park at the end of the season, with no renewed offer in sight as things stand, and Premier League clubs are now eyeing a cut-price deal.
However, Eddie Howe is a big fan of the striker due to their close relationship, and is keen for him to find fitness and remain their second-choice.
Wilson has an impressive goalscoring record for Newcastle, finding the net 48 times in 108 games so far.
However, with interest from the likes of Fulham and Brentford growing, sources say the club could opt to let the striker leave, but only if they can land a replacement.
After a lack of transfer activity in the summer, the Magpies are ready to explore their options in January as they look to strengthen Howe’s team.
Given his availability and injury issues, supporters have previously called for the club to cash in on their second-choice striker, with the opportunity now presenting itself.

Since his move to St James’ Park in 2020, Wilson has missed a combined 91 games for club and country through various injury issues.
However, the January transfer window will provide the last chance for Newcastle to make money from his sale before he leaves for free in the summer.
