Nottingham Forest have dropped Keinan Davis hint as club-record deal close – expert

Nottingham Forest appear to have ended their interest in Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Reds and Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the imminent arrival of Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi suggests Davis, 24, will not be returning to the City Ground.

Davis spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The centre-forward helped Steve Cooper’s side gain promotion to the Premier League.

A return was mooted earlier in the summer but it now appears the newly-promoted side have turned their attention elsewhere.

According to The Telegraph‘s John Percy (20 June), Forest are set to sign former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin in a club-record £17.5million deal.

When asked by Football Insider if the deal for Awoniyi would likely spell the end of Forest’s interest in Davis, Campbell said: “It seems that way.

“Perhaps Steven Gerrard liked what he saw from Keinan Davis. Maybe Villa wouldn’t let him go.

“Steve Cooper needs to do what he needs to do to get Forest functioning in the Premier League.

“Awoniyi is powerful, strong and quick. He has traits that Cooper likes at the top end of the pitch. It’s a move that makes sense.”

Awoniyi impressed in the Bundesliga last season and scored 15 league goals.

The Nigeria international joined Liverpool in August 2015 but never made a senior appearance for the club.

In other news, Steve Cooper hailed by Campbell as Nottingham Forest close in on ‘biggest signing of the summer’.
