Nottingham Forest likely to get points deduction reduced in huge twist – Keith Wyness

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has suggested Nottingham Forest should see their points deduction reduced by “one or two” points.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Premier League have opened the door to their appeal by failing to establish a clear precedent for rule breaches.

Forest were hit with a four-point penalty last month after breaching the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules’ allowed threshold of £61million by £34.5million.

An independent commission rejected the Midlands club’s mitigating factors – but appealed the decision and will attempt to reduce the punishment.

Nottingham Forest backed to claw back ‘one or two points’ after FFP appeal

No official date for a verdict has been set, but it will come no later than 24 May – five days after the season ends.

Forest currently sit 17th on the table on 25 points – three more than relegation rivals Luton Town in 18th.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the Forest appeal will drag on a little longer, possibly to the end of this month.

“I’d hope they get some points back.

“I was surprised when they appealed, but good luck to them.

“They could get one or two points back – but we haven’t seen their points of argument yet.

“But all the different verdicts returned by different commissions does give their lawyers some room for argument.

“There isn’t a clear precedent.

“This is a mess that the Premier League have got themselves into.

“The Brennan Johnson sale will be a part of it, they’re claiming there was no sporting advantage.

“What seem to be fair and reasonable arguments are being overturned by seemingly dogmatic decisions.”
