Odds slashed: PL rivals now clear favourites to complete audacious last-gasp swoop for Spurs ace
Southampton are now the clear favourites to complete a deadline-day swoop for Tottenham’s Erik Lamela after their odds were slashed by a leading bookmaker.
Roma had been the favourites to sign the attacking midfielder in a shock January move.
However, the Independent has reported that the Saints have enquired about a deal for Lamela, saying that it is more likely to be a loan move than a permanent deal.
They also credit Roma with an interest but say that Southampton are very keen to conclude a deal as they sit at the wrong end of the Premier League table.
That’s led to 888Sport slashing the odds of him joining Southampton in January to just 3/1.
Roma are back at 6/1 in a two-horse race, although the bookie still thinks it’s more likely that the player will remain at Tottenham.
Football Insider verdict:
This would be one of the January windows more unlikely deals were it to go through. However, it might not be as strange as it seems on the surface. He could do a great job at Southampton, a team that poses no threat to Tottenham this season. Lamela still needs matches under his belt after so long out and he might not get these at Tottenham now. That could mean that a second half of the season stint at the south coast is, literally, just what the doctor ordered.
In other Tottenham transfer news, a flop could see his summer deal torn up after a major bombshell.
