Ominous comments from Leeds first-team star could spell summer departure and trouble for Heck
COMMENT
Pontus Jansson hasn’t been at his best at Elland Road this season, but then who has?
The season has been a disaster for pretty much everyone concerned, even attacker Samu Saiz, who has shined but also fallen down over high-profile disciplinary issues.
But Jansson’s latest comments will be particularly ominous for Leeds supporters.
Talking to Swedish outlet Expressen, Jansson said that he wanted to hold talks with Leeds and get clarification over their plans for next season.
“We’ll see what’s happening, I want to hear from the club how to look next year and so on,” the 6ft 3in colossus said.
His agent Martin Dahlin had previously confirmed “great” interest in his client and Leeds fans will be concerned that he wants out after his Leeds ambitions have fallen sour.
There are two ways to look at his comments.
One is that he just wants to make sure the club’s ambitions are aligned with his – that’s a good thing, and if Heckingbottom can convince him of his vision then Leeds fans could see the Jansson of old next season.
However, footballers don’t tend to just drop these things into interviews willy-nilly – the old adage no smoke without fire is generally true.
Jansson would have known his comments would get picked up, with the Yorkshire Evening Post the latest outlet to put a report out.
Jansson signed a contract last October that would keep him at Elland Road until 2022 so fans would have the right to be annoyed with the defender.
What’s changed since then, apart from a barren run of form that the players have contributed to?
Well, Heckingbottom has come in and it could be that Jansson doesn’t see the manager as having the skills or the vision to take Leeds back to the top.
That’s far more worrying and Leeds fans will now be hoping that there’s nothing more to his comments than build for the future assurances.
If leeds lose Jansson in the summer he would be very hard to replace.
