Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has backed recent loan arrival Ovie Ejaria to take games by the scruff of the neck and get fans off their seats with excitement.
The 20-year-old recently joined up at Ibrox on a year’s loan from Liverpool and Gerrard is expecting big things from the midfield playmaker.
“He’s an exciting player, very skilful” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“He’ll have the crowd on the edge of their seats and fits the profile that we were looking for in the midfield area.
“He’s six foot two, he’s rangy, leggy. He can win balls back and also drive at defences and make things happen. He gives us that nice blend in midfield and something different to what’s been here before.”
Ejaria spent the second-half of last season on loan at Sunderland, scoring one goal in 11 games.
Football Insider verdict
Going by those comments from Steven Gerrard, it sounds as if Ovie Ejaria is going to play a big part for the Gers next season, and could even be a first-team regular. He does sound like a very promising player from Gerrard’s description, and the Gers have lacked a solid box to box midfielder for a while now. He could well from a partnership with Ross McCrorie in the middle of the park, that would provide the Gers with plenty of energy, which their play has been lacking over the last few seasons. The fact that the 20-year-old signed a new deal at Anfield before moving to Ibrox shows that they must rate the player, and Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on his development. For the next season though, it is all about what the player does for the Gers, and he sounds like he could be a very promising player indeed. As ever though, only time will tell if he lives up to Gerrard’s high expectations.
