Noel Whelan has suggested Liverpool may “know something we don’t” about the return dates of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Leeds United and Coventry City striker delivered his verdict after it was reported the Premier League champions will not sign a defender in January.
The Athletic claimed that Liverpool have no plans to add any players in the new year and will work on internal solutions to their injury crisis.
Van Dijk is expected to miss the season with an ACL injury he picked up after a challenge from Jordan Pickford in last month’s Merseyside derby.
Meanwhile, this site revealed last week Gomez is set to miss the season with a knee injury he suffered on international duty after the club confirmed he will miss a “significant part of the remainder of 2020-21 season”.
Asked by Football Insider whether he was surprised Liverpool were not planning to bolster their ranks in January, Whelan said: “Unless they know something we don’t about these players coming back in that key area of central defence then they don’t seem to panicking about it and they feel they’ve got enough in their Under-23s to cover until that time.
“What they won’t do is panic buy or sign someone for the sake of it, that’s not the Liverpool way.
“Players who are out of contract at the moment are out of contract for a reason and will certainly not fit the bill at Liverpool.
“It’s a difficult one, I do feel they need back up and cover now but if they feel they can deal with that situation and have enough within their ranks at the club to see them through until whenever these key players come back, then you’ve got to trust in their process.”
