'Pathetic' - Alan Shearer blasts Newcastle man during defeat v Tottenham
By Harvey Byrne
Newcastle legend and BBC pundit Alan Shearer blasted current midfielder Jonjo Shelvey after he saw a red card in their season opening defeat against Tottenham.
The 25-year-old central midfielder lined up for the Magpies as the club’s captain at St. James’ Park, but just three minutes into the second half referee Andre Marriner issued him a straight red following a stamp on Spurs’ Dele Alli.
The scoreline read 0-0 when Newcastle were brought down to 10 men and they looked to put up a good fight against Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who finished in second place in the last campaign.
However, the loss of Shelvey resulted in Newcastle falling to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham and Shearer could see the end result to the red card as he slammed Shelvey as “pathetic” via his personal Twitter account right after his poor discipline.
That is just pathetic Jonjo Shelvey ???? #NEWTOT

It is certainly not the first time that Shelvey has been caught in controversy for Newcastle and he saw a five-match suspension after using racially abusive language towards Wolves’ Romain Saiss in the last campaign.

However, Rafa Benitez will be keen to ensure he eradicates that side of his game swiftly as Shelvey could be the difference between the Magpies winning survival this season.
In other Newcastle news, Florian Lejeune left St. James’ Park on crutches after the defeat.
