Leicester City are the “perfect” club for Leeds United to model themselves on, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United striker and boyhood Whites fan after owner Andrea Radrizzani outlines his vision for the club.

The Italian told Sports Pro Media, as reported by the Yorkshire Post, that Leicester have a “good model” that he hopes to follow.

He added: “That’s what I aspire to do but also with the acknowledgment that Leeds United, with all respect [to Leicester], is a much bigger brand internationally.”

And Whelan believes this is the right way for Leeds to go.

He told Football Insider: “They’re the perfect team to model yourself on.

“They came out of the Championship into the Premier League and they did not spend a great deal of money when they won that Premier League title.

“It was a quick progression but they bought the right players into the football club to start with, without spending a great deal of money, they were very shrewd about who they signed.

“They had a great tactician who set the team up to their strengths and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, we’re not a club that can go out and spend 200 million pounds. We’ve got to be very clever, we’ve got to choose our players wisely.

“You gradually build that team over time. We don’t have the money to buy a title so we have to be sensible in how we approach the Premier League and approach our squad.

“They’re a great outfit to build and look at are Leicester they’re a prime example of a team that’s come up and done everything the right way and they’re in a very very healthy position now because I think there’ll be right up there in the top six this year.”

In other news, Kevin Campbell has been left wowed by an “amazing” Leeds United 24-year-old who has taken the Premier League by storm.
