Philippe Clement sack: Sky Sports share ‘incredible’ Rangers update

Sky Sports’ Gordon Duncan has given an “incredible” update on the future of under-fire Rangers boss Philippe Clement.

The Belgian manager’s job is on the line following another disappointing away performance as Rangers dropped points away at Dundee FC.

The Gers drew 1-1 at Den Park and now find themselves on 41 points from 21 games, and are 15 points behind league-leaders Celtic.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Duncan gave an update on Clement’s job prospects, and the fan’s reaction.

Duncan said: “Last night, the last we heard from him (Clement), he said he believed he had 200% backing from the Rangers board. You wake up this morning looking for reasons to contradict him and there aren’t any, as far as we (Sky Sports) understand, in fact more than that, Philippe Clement is at the Rangers training centre this morning. He’s going to take training as normal, so nothing imminent in that regard which may disappoint Rangers fans but that is the reality this morning.”

“Last night was just another poor performance on the road, that’s four away games in a row rangers have failed to come out with all three points. You stretch that back over the season, 11 games on the road and Rangers have won only three. Now you go through those in isolation, it’s entirely possible and understandable that Rangers drop points away to Motherwell, or St Mirren or Hibs or Dundee but to do it all continuously is clearly just piling up too much for these Rangers fans. “

He then went on to say: “It’s incredible how quickly football changes, especially in this city. One week ago we stood here in Glasgow and we spoke about rangers beating Celtic 3-0 here at Ibrox, it was the day after that game, they swept Celtic aside, there was a real confidence emanating from the Rangers fans, yes it was too late to do anything about the title but it was 11 points that day (the gap to Celtic) all of a sudden. 15 points and the picture could not look any worse.”

Philippe Clement unlikely to keep the Rangers job in January

Football Insider opinion

For all his posturing around having “200%” of the boards backing, it seems increasingly unlikely that the former AS Monaco manager will be in the job come the end of January.

Whilst life as Gers boss started well for him with a Scottish League Cup victory last season, however, four Old Firm Derby losses in 2023/24 (including a Scotting Cup Final) was the first nail in the coffin.

This season has been a poor one for Rangers, and despite the argument that injuries have not helped his cause, the consensus opinion within the fanbase seems to be that it is time to move on from Clement.

If Rangers do move on from the former Belgian international, it will likely be soon, so as to give the incumbent manager time to find some players whilst the transfer window remains open.

Steve Cooper has been named by Football Insider’s Senior Correspondent, Peter O’Rourke, as one of the favourites for the job if Clement goes.
