Why this signing would be the last piece of the Leeds promotion puzzle
By Will Butcher
Leeds fans will be on tenterhooks as the January transfer window comes to an end, with the news that Garry Monk could be about to add the final piece to their promotion jigsaw by bringing in Ashley Fletcher from West Ham.
Garry Monk has received a huge boost in his pursuit of Fletcher, with Dimitri Payet’s move to Marseille set to ignite a transfer chain that could see the 21-year-old move to Elland Road.
Payet’s transfer money could be reinvested in Brentford’s Scott Hogan, making a Leeds move for fringe striker Fletcher much more likely to materialise.
Bringing Fletcher to Yorkshire could even see Leeds claw in both Newcastle and Brighton, and challenge them for an automatic spot.
Monk would be adding a player who could realistically score around 10 goals from now until the end of the season, taking the weight off of Chris Wood’s shoulders and adding to the firepower that Leeds have behind them.

Fletcher’s pace to get in behind the defence would provide the Yorkshire giants with something different up front, but Fletcher also has the aerial ability to fit in with Leeds’ threat from set pieces.
With his best years ahead of him at just 21, Fletcher also has the quality to become a Premier League striker in the future – and he could do that with Leeds by helping them gain promotion this term.
Monk has been desperate to add fire power to his Leeds squad, and bringing in Fletcher provides top-quality competition which could get the best out of 20-goal forward Wood and be a player for the future.
With 48 hours to complete a deal for the former Barnsley loanee, Monk is set for a nail-biting finale in trying to sign what could be a season-defining player.
