Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been backed to deal with Alfredo Morelos in the right way by Noel Whelan who suggested he is undroppable.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan delivered his verdict as new signing Kemar Roofe nears full fitness.
Roofe has made two substitute appearances since signing from Anderlecht this summer but is now in line to start games.
The 27-year-old seemed to have been brought in to replace Morelos who saw a £17m move to Lille fall through.
The latest twist came as Marseille prepare a big money bid for the Colombian, as revealed by Football Insider.
Asked by Football Insider whether he would expect Morelos to be dropped in favour of Roofe, Whelan said: “They spend a lot of time trying to deal with Morelos psychologically, trying to give him and give him a rollicking when he needs it.
“One thing you will get with Steven Gerrard is honesty. He’s straight to the point.
“He won’t just be putting an arm round a player because that’s what they want, he’ll deal with them when that’s needed.
“The thing is Morelos scores goal and while he’s a Rangers player you need him to do that because they win football matches.
“Right now, he’s in a better position than Kemar Roofe because he knows the league. He knows how to score goals and he’s set them up this season already.
“At the minute Roofe is second choice because of his fitness levels and Morelos’ past goalscoring tallies in Scotland.
“He’s one of those players like Edouard at Celtic, you’re not going to drop him because you know what you’re going to get.”
Morelos, 24, has scored twice and laid on two assists in his four Scottish Premiership appearances this season.
